The Nanticoke River watershed is 725,000 acres and includes a mix of freshwater tidal wetlands and brackish wetlands. The river and its watershed are under threat due to incompatible farming practices, sewage, and the clear-cutting of trees, which removes an important means of filtration for the water as it seeps down into the soil. The high degree of development in the watershed region also promotes polluted runoff after rain and storms as the water travels over concrete and eventually drains into the Chesapeake Bay.

Located in the northern section of the Bluegrass region, this area has remained relatively undisturbed and provides Kentucky’s only example of Pleistocene glaciations. These early glacier deposits created moist, fertile, and acidic soil unique to this region. The nature preserve surrounding the Dinsmore homestead consists of 107 acres of mature forest that includes oak, sugar maple, and white ash. The area is known for its spectacular display of wildflowers, including dwarf larkspur, wood poppy, and trout lily.

History, Kentucky was the west. It was a frontier where English, French, and Spanish explorers came into contact with Native American tribes in the midst of a wild landscape roaring with buffalo and the beating wings of wild turkeys. This contact proved to be disastrous for the indigenous cultures and for the buffalo. While many of the original inhabitants of Kentucky either died of European diseases or were forced into territories beyond their homelands, the buffalo were hunted to near extinction.
