Religious beliefs have helped to perpetuate this state of affairs. The head of the imperial family in Yamato, from whom the present emperor is descended, claimed direct descent from the sun goddess (Amaterasu Omikami) and was thought to possess the unique ability to call on her powers. For an agricultural people the role of the emperor as direct intercessor with the sun goddess was most important.
